"Urban Emancipation Project"
. ('Rescuing
Brothel Slaves')
Several years ago, in one of the Latin
American cities where we have projects for street
children, a Chinese Triad organized local gangs to
capture vulnerable children for the purposes of organ
harvesting and slavery. That year more than 600 children
disappeared from our barrios. We were forced to recruit
more staff in order to accompany our children to and
from school each day (example).
When the Triad moved on, the threat to our children
subsided.
Four years later we were living in a famous pilgrim
center in Europe, where we were exposed to the sad
results of human trafficking.
Most of us have been hearing for some time about enslaved
sex workers - seen news documentaries about young
girls who thought they were being recruited for a
normal job: and ended up as slaves. Like me, you may
have felt bad for the girls, but thought it was up
to law enforcement to save them, and bring the traffickers
and pimps to justice. BUT THIS HAS NOT BEEN HAPPENING.
Apparently, at least some of those who should be freeing
these girls are themselves either somehow participating
on the wrong side, or else are not convinced the problem
merrits their intervention..
(Our research indicates: this form of official corruption/licence
may be taking place on a global scale).
It is understandable that ordinary citizens are afraid
to intervene. On the one side is organized crime,
with their brutal enforcers. On the other side, in
at least the places we have tested so far: some agents
of local law enforcement are also against our intervention.
And so the suffering of these dear girls goes on day
and night, year on year.
My own reticence to taking action finally burst when,
in 2016 I rented an apartment for a year in the pilgrim
city of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. There, quite
by coincidence, I was exposed up close and personally
to the plight of these poor suffering female slaves:
and I was finally moved to help save them.
This came about when quite by accident, I found myself
living right across the hall from a busy brothel.
Its door was three steps away, right in front of our
door. Through the peephole we could see everything.
We bumped into the clients, saw the girls, were threatened
by the thug at the door. Our other neighbours in the
respectable apartment building said they had complained
numerous times (over fifteen years) to the police
and authorities. The result was the same as when we
complained: a threatening visit from an enforcer.
Even the local press made excuses for not turning
up.
Apparently, the owner has two other such brothels
in other well-situated apartments in the city, and
that the slaves are rotated between them.
So we went to work.
