Earth words [recently spoken]: "Man, o man, little you, dream, and when you dream: dream of me. And when you wake look at me - take a good long look. You will see an enemy now. Yes, I was your friend, but now I am your enemy. You made it so. You hurt me and I am angry. You drain my resources, abuse me, scorn my hospitality and I have had enough. If you are so greedy and ignorant as to gorge on me until all is fetid or on fire; and you headed for mass suicide: no point in letting you take me with you. You can either change or get off.

I sometimes ask myself what went wrong.

I recently dreamt of you. In my dream I let go of gravity - I was angry and it seemed the simplest way to get rid of you. You're killing me, you know? In my dream, I awoke in time to call the animals back. I called you too but you were singing your way through space, something rapturous. Naughty children, having trashed their own home: seeking another. Silly you. Can't say I won't miss you, can't say I will either: I the friend you nearly slew.

When first I gave you leave to share my bounty (along with the many creatures already in my bosom when you turned up) you worshipped me, believed you belonged to me [I hasten to add, this was neither asked nor required]. By the time you appeared, my climatic tribulations - fire from the universe then ice over everything; were mostly behind me: so it was easy for you to flourish. For some time you abode in harmony with most of the other creatures and with me. We shared some happy millennia together. All the while you were evolving, inventing things to help you prosper. You organized yourselves and each other; and before long you began to compete with one another: even fought. By degrees, you subjected many of the other creatures to serve you, help you prosper, gain advantage over one another.

Eventually, you stopped worshipping me - thankfully - but instead you began to worship yourselves and your possessions. You even made up or discovered unseen beings (you claimed 'they' had discovered you) and you began worshipping them. Different communities of you divided, each rallying behind its own unseen being, each group worshiping its unseen being in its own particular (and often secret) way. Some commuinities fought to the death with other communities over whose unseen being was the greater.

How did I, your eternal host, fit into all of this? I didn't. I had become no more to you than the platform on which you built your homes and cities. No more than a big dumb resource whose parts you could monetize for your gain. You plowed, drilled, mined, extracted and exploited me without any thought or provision for my health or future well-being. By degrees my sweet water got poluted, the soil's nutrients depleated, oceans below and air above became so filled with your bile no creature, not even you, could long survive. I should have done more to stop you - I thought you would out-grow it on your own. But you only grew worse.

I am about to close my eyes. I will slowly count to ten. When I open them again; if I can see that you have utterly changed: you may stay."
